Primary Care Society

Founded in 2012 in response to the physician shortage, the Fort St James Primary Care Not-For-Profit Society is a nine-member volunteer board managing the Fort St James Health Centre in partnership with Northern Health.  What was once a small clinic has grown into a space that is home to an integrated team of the medical staff and the Northern Health Inter-Professional Team. There are 8.0 FTE physicians, practicing in Fort St. James, Nak’azdli Whut’en, Tl’azt’en Nation and Binche Whut’en, a nurse practitioner, resident locum and team of inter-professionals.  The society supports 7 outreach specialists who provide both in-person and virtual care to our patients.

The team has built a robust care model.  This model has created a foundation and structure that has paved the way for full integration with the Inter-Professional team within all our communities.  Together and in partnership, the teams focus is to improve the health of our communities as a collective.

Local membership partners who have oversight of the board include: The District of Fort St. James, Mayor Martin Alphee, Regional District Bulkley Nechako “Area C” Judy Greenaway, and Nak’azdli Whut’en, Chief Aileen Prince.

As we diligently supported the design of the Fort St. James Health Centre we are also working to support the initial planning for the new Stuart Lake Hospital.  We are looking forward to relocation with all our health care professional in September of 2024.  It is exciting to see this project move forward.
